In 1966, ITN reported on the First Iraqi-Kurdish War. The conflict had been ongoing since 1961 with Mustafa Barzani and his guerrilla army attempting to estalish an independent Kurdistan. By 1966, the 25,000 strong guerrilla army had pinned down Iraqi forces although aerial attacks had devestated the local area. The War lasted until 1970 and ended in stalemate, although the later Iraqi–Kurdish Autonomy Agreement stipulated the creation of an autonomous region.
This exclusive film from ITN was apparently the first film report ever from what was then the world's most forgotten battlefront. The film was shot by a camera team who entered the Kurdish occupied area of Northern Iraq through Iran, the only available entry point.
