In the spring of 1940, British troops were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk as Hitler’s army closed in. Soldiers faced relentless German air raids, machine-gun fire, and dire conditions with no food or water. Dunkirk was a military disaster in terms of equipment losses, but a miraculous success in saving over 300,000 troops. The evacuation allowed Britain to continue fighting, preventing the need for a peace treaty with Hitler.
