Maverick filmmaker Monte Hellman is best remembered for a pair of existential, anti-westerns starring Jack Nicholson, and his rubber burning-road movie “Two-Lane Blacktop,” with singer-songwriter James Taylor and Beach Boy Dennis Wilson. This 1959 Roger Corman Filmgroup release is his directorial debut, which Hellman later described as “Key Largo” with a monster.
