Beautiful Old Torque Wrench Full Restoration
One of the nicest torque wrenches ive ever seen! well it is now! This week i embark on another restoration journey and hopefully bring the life back to a long forgotten item.
As you can see i have chosen a Vintage torque wrench to restore as its very unusual looking and i could see it has a lot of potential.
On first inspection everything looks good, it seems complete and in working condition just a little stiff because of the rust but ill soon have that sorted out. So the first thing to do is strip it all down which is a very simple job surprisingly the dial cover is just a press fit brass item then from that point the casing is only held together by 4 screws and then it comes apart with a bit of prising and hammering.
Once apart the plastic items were submerged in a bleach solution to brighten then and possibly take out the yellowing, In future i will use a retrobrite solution as the bleach didnt work too well. At the same time i also made up some DEOX C rust remover and placed the corroded items in it while i made a start on stripping the old paint from the casings.
The paint was stripped by good old fashioned paint stripper and a wire brush rather than the media blaster as the aluminum felt quite soft and i didn't want to ruin the casings. once stripped i put the handle into the vise and welded up a hole someone had drilled ( probably for a string to hang the wrench up ) I dont have a TIG welder so i loaded up a spool of aluminum wire into the MIG and set about welding the holes up then dressed the welds back with a file and emery cloth.
After this stage i primed the casing and while that was curing i set about zinc / electro plating the small rusted parts. After i was finished plating the primer had cured so i could wet flat out any defects and start painting some color. First i painted the dial housing silver so as to increase the visibility of the markings inside then this was masked off and the case was given several coats of Lucifer red metallic and a thick coat of clear to keep it looking glossy and sharp for years to come.
After the paint was cured the brass and bare metal parts were buffed to a mirror shine and then its a case of greasing everything up and re-assembling the item and giving it a test.
Thank you for watching and i hope to see you in the next video :)
