These systems are especially well-suited for regenerative winegrowing, regenerative viticulture, organic viticulture, organic winegrowing, biodynamic viticulture, and any type of ecological viticulture, as well as all types of conventional viticulture. Whether you use the Watson Trellis, Geneva Double Curtain (GDC), Overhead Pergola Training, or Married Vines in Trees, or any other trellis system that trains the grape and shoot growth area higher than about 45 inches or 1.5 meters, raised or elevated grape trellis systems have many advantages over the commonly used VSP (vertical shoot positioning), or even low goblet or head-trained vine trellis systems. Adam Huss, Beyond Organic Wine host and producer, discusses and demonstrates the multiple benefits of these high trellis systems. One of the most important results of all of these benefits is better tasting wine.
Please note: although this video focuses on grape wine growing, Beyond Organic Wine defines wine as any fermented fruit beverage. Please grow ecologically by following the lead of what already grows well where you are without your help. Regenerative Winegrowing should start with ecological principles. If your wine crop would die if you neglected it for 10 years, maybe you shouldn't grow it there. Work in services of your ecosystem rather than trying to make your ecosystem serve your whims.
This video was filmed in Los Angeles at Crenshaw Cru. The VSP system shown grows Sangiovese grapes, and the overhead pergola system grows Nero D'Avola.
