Debabrata Biswas needs no introduction when it comes to the world of Rabindra Sangeet. He is one of the most talked about Tagore Songs Singer of all times.
He hailed from Barishal which is now a part of Bangladesh. Debabrata Biswas was nick named George and that is why he was fondly called George da by everyone. Debabrata Biswas’ musical career can be briefly divided into two halves. The early days where he sang Rabindra Sangeet following all the strict norms and the later stage where he experimented with the music accompaniments and presentation of the songs. This is the time where Debabrata Biswas became one of the most controversial Rabindra Sangeet artists. But it is again this era’s music that made Debabrata Biswas a household name. His early renditions of Tagore Songs shows a brilliant full throated robust vocal expression as well as a strict adherence to the Traditional rules and norms.
In the later half he changed this strict adherence and created what he felt suited best with these Tagore Songs. Debabrata Biswas brought about this change in especially those Tagore Songs which were richly influenced by Western melodies and Harmonies, especially Scottish and Celtic Folk melodies. This was like a breath of fresh air for these Bengali Songs. Debabrata Biswas for the first time introduced western instruments like Violin, Viola, Cello and Piano in a Rabindra Sangeet. This was naturally not accepted quite well with the authorities and that followed with a tiff between Biswa Bharati authorities and Debabrata Biswas. This along with his ill health forced George Da to stop his singing career. He took out his grief in the form of an autobiography titled “Bratyojoner Ruddha Sangeet”.
