Dr. Deussing's #PSYCHOLOGY READING GROUP discusses "BEYOND PSYCHOTHERAPY: DIALECTICAL THERAPY" — a brilliant article by Dr. Tullio Carere-Comes! 😃 Citation is below. Listen to a reading of this article at: https://soundcloud.com/integrative-dbt/beyond-psychotherapy-dialectical-therapy. 🎧
Some topics discussed were: (a) the benefits of having a therapeutic map to guide clinicians in navigating complex challenges, (b) the advantages of expanding the focus of therapy to address psychological issues along with philosophical questions related to existence, (c) the necessity of secure attachment for effective therapy, (d) how therapists have to embody both maternal & paternal energies to meet clients' needs, and (e) the importance of infusing creativity into #healing processes. 🤔

CITATION: Carere-Comes, T. (1999). Beyond psychotherapy: Dialectical #therapy. Journal of Psychotherapy #Integration, 9(4), 365–396.
ABSTRACT: Dialectical therapy is a common factor approach to psychotherapy integration, in which four general therapeutic strategies are taken as the cardinal points of a map of the field. It is said to be “beyond psychotherapy” because what is commonly referred to as psychotherapy is more than psychological treatment. It is a dialectic between two basic levels or axes: the psychological remaking, which deals with defect-driven disorders, & the philosophical uncovering, which deals with conflict-driven problems. The first level can be graphically represented as the horizontal axis of the field, connecting a “maternal” & “paternal” pole, in which the #therapist responds to the basic psychological needs of secure attachment & responsible cooperation. The second level can be represented as the vertical axis of the field, connecting a K (knowledge) vertex & an O (unknown) vertex, in which the therapist responds to the basic philosophical needs of knowledge (“know thyself)” & of the unknown as unknowable (the noumenon of all phenomena, the source of generative & healing powers). A map is necessary to organize the basic therapeutic needs & the range of responses to them in a coherent pattern. As a good map can help in orienting empirical research, this in turn can help in constructing better maps. 🤔
