First Time That 5 Shay Steam Locomotives Operated At Same Time! These Are Real Coal Burning Steam Engines On The Cass Scenic Railroad In Cass West Virginia. The Worlds Largest Collection Of Geared Steam Locomotives, Cass Scenic Railroad Operates On Logging Tracks & Ex Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Tracks. Lots of smoke and steam train whistles!
I left my home at 3am and arrived at Cass, West Virginia at 9am. This is Part 1 of 2 parts. We see the locomotives make 5 round trip passes from the water tower to the train station and back. Each eastbound trip the locomotives were running forward and something different was done. You will see the steam engines running single and in groups. The final pass was the grand finale with as much whistle and smoke as possible. That was really awesome and loud! I filmed at a couple of different spots. Which location and which pass was your favorite?
It was special to see Shay Number 6 back in operation. It was the final Shay built by Lima Locomotive Works in 1945. The locomotive spent 4 years in operation hauling coal before retirement.
The trains operate on 160.455 and are standard gauge. Last year Cass operated 4 Shays and a Climax locomotive. I filmed that and you can find last years Parade Of Steam in my Steam Trains play list. Part 2 will show the passenger trains pulled by the steam locomotives. They ran 2 round trip passenger trains along the river on the line that goes to Durbin, West Virginia. The line is finally open all the way from Cass to Durbin although these trains did not run the fun distance.
