Founded in the 17th century by Raja Ugrasen Singh, this estate once flourished under the rule of the Chauhan Rajputs before the British dismantled its sovereignty and turned it into a tax-collecting Zamindari system. In 1764, the Battle of Buxar changed everything. With the Treaty of Allahabad, the British East India Company took over tax collection in Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha, reshaping the power dynamics in the region. Bettiah’s rulers, now Zamindars under British governance, struggled with financial crises, eventually leading to major land losses to European indigo planters. By the late 19th century, the last ruling Maharaja, Harendra Kishore Singh, died without a male heir, leaving the estate in turmoil. His widow, Rani Janki Kunwar, fought to retain control, but in 1897, the British imposed the Court of Wards Act, effectively taking over the estate and its vast wealth. Even after India’s independence, the legal battle over Bettiah Raj’s 15,000-acre landholding continued. Multiple claimants came forward, and for decades, the Bihar government struggled to determine rightful ownership. Finally, in 2024, the government passed a bill to officially acquire the estate, ending one of the longest-standing land disputes in Indian history. With British-era laws still in place for over a century, the Bettiah Raj story remains a testament to India’s complex feudal past and colonial manipulation. But was the estate truly taken from its rightful heirs? Or was this a conspiracy to seize its unimaginable wealth? The copyright ownership in the video rests with India Today Group.
