► BMW engines and oil filter housing gasket replacements are about as connected as they come. The gasket seals the oil filter housing to the engine block, ensuring oil passing through the filter doesn't escape as it enters and leaves the housing. However, the seal is known to degrade with long time use and will eventually begin to leak.
Replacing the oil filter housing on the S55 engine is a little more complicated than with past engines. The packaging required to stuff the high-performance engine into the F8X chassis means the intake manifold must come off the engine to remove and replace the gasket. While that sounds like a hassle, replacing the gasket will solve a high-pressure oil leak, and that's worth the effort for the engine's sake.
