A boat community known as the Anchor-outs is facing the end, as local authorities force them to relocate in the name of protecting eelgrass.

For decades people have live on boats anchored in Richardson Bay, and for just as long local government authorities have been trying to get rid of them.
Now it appears the end is drawing near. A new eelgrass protection zone has forced many of the anchor-outs to move their boats from where they were anchored for years. The EPZ went into effect on October 15, 2024.
As the pressure from the Richardson Bay Regional Agency, and others has increased in recent years, the number of boats on the bay has dwindled. At one point there were over 200 boats anchored in the bay. Now there are less than 30.
A few resilient liveaboards are hoping to find a way to continue living on the water.
