Weekly BobBlast Issue 360
Tools of the Trade - Brushes, Towels and Fingers
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
This week’s BobBlast is a popular topic and maybe you’ve thought about it… Do I have to paint with a brush - or are there more options???
We painters tend to collect a ton of brushes - all with the promise of perfecting a certain technique. I tend toward painting with larger and longer brushes to help me stay loose. The photo of Matisse painting with his long brush was an early inspiration! Because of that photo, I have extended and customized many of my brushes.
Brushes are just one of the tools we can use to paint… and paint looser. My other go-to painting tool is a paper towel! In many BobBlasts, demos and workshops, you see me painting with folded paper towels. I can apply a lot of paint quickly, I can wipe away and I can rub paint into the surface to create a patina-like effect.
Another favorite tool is a twig — used to scape into the paint and draw back into the painting. This creates and increases texture and surprises.
Painting with my fingers… Ah yes! In art college, I loved ceramics. Throwing mud around and getting my fingers wet. So today, I use my fingers to blend, soften edges and add small touches of color. It’s natural to me - adding fingers to my painting tools. Before I start painting, I use a hand barrier cream. It makes it easier to clean my hands at the end of the day.
Painting time is not passive time for me. I enjoy the physically active time in front of a painting!
Use all your tools!
