Bobi Wine and Nalukoola Take Over Kawempe North

Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, is a Ugandan politician, musician, and activist. He rose to fame as a popular reggae and Afrobeat artist before transitioning into politics. Music Career: Bobi Wine gained prominence in the early 2000s with socially conscious music that resonated with ordinary Ugandans. His songs often addressed poverty, corruption, and social justice issues, earning him the nickname "Ghetto President." Political Career: In 2017, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Kyadondo East under an independent ticket. In 2020, he became the leader of the opposition party National Unity Platform (NUP) and ran against President Yoweri Museveni in the 2021 Ugandan Presidential Elections. His campaign was met with heavy government crackdowns, including arrests, intimidation, and violent suppression of protests. Despite officially losing the election to Museveni, Bobi Wine and his supporters alleged widespread electoral fraud. Activism & Influence: Bobi Wine is a vocal critic of Museveni’s long rule, advocating for democracy, human rights, and youth empowerment. His "People Power" movement has gained significant support, especially among Uganda’s younger generation. He continues to be one of the most influential opposition figures in Uganda, pushing for political change through both activism and his leadership in NUP. Counsel Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola is a prominent Ugandan lawyer and politician known for his active involvement in legal advocacy and political affairs. He co-founded the law firm Nalukoola, Kakeeto Advocates & Solicitors and serves as an enrolled advocate of the High Court of Uganda and all Courts of Judicature. Throughout his legal career, Nalukoola has been involved in significant cases, including challenging the amendment of Article 102(b) of the Ugandan Constitution, which removed the age limit cap for presidential candidates, and defending Muslim suspects accused of murdering clerics. In addition to his legal practice, Nalukoola has held various advisory roles, such as National Legal Advisor for the Democratic Party (DP) and advisor to the Uganda Journalists Association (UJA). He has also been a board member of the Buganda Cultural and Development Foundation (BUCADEF) and has participated in several school boards. His political experience includes serving as the Deputy Speaker of Kawempe Division. UMLAS.ORG In February 2025, Nalukoola was selected as the National Unity Platform's (NUP) flag bearer for the Kawempe North by-election, following the passing of the former MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya. His candidacy is seen as a strategic move to mobilize support from the youth and working-class citizens of Kawempe North. Beyond his legal and political endeavors, Nalukoola has demonstrated a commitment to community development, particularly in sports. He organized the Nalukoola Kawempe North Sports Tournament for 2024-2025, encompassing football, netball, and ludo, to foster unity and talent development among the youth in Kawempe North.
