Hi girlie, welcome to Debrief Sesh where we talk about dating, pop culture, and dating in pop culture. I usually have hot takes about literally everything so if unfiltered opinions are your thing, hit the like and subscribe button for more unhinged content✨ Dating could be really tricky. Showing up pretty, well-dressed, and well-spoken is not going to guarantee a great dating experience. Modern women like us want to put real work on our mindset, and make sure that our magnetic glow is as genuine as it is irresistible. We have all heard countless feminine energy tips to take care of your love life and elevate your well-being. But how deeply do we understand them, and how well do we implement them in real life? I'm here to provide us with a solution to that. Debrief Sesh is a community made by women for women everywhere with the same goal: understand what it means to be a high-value woman to ourselves. We respect differences, and honor the fact that every woman has her own vision of who she wants to be, and how she wants to be perceived. By discussing dating role models and female characters on TV series, dating shows, and popular culture moments, we turn these conversations into reflection tools, and figure out what it means for each of us to be our own dream girl. 🌸 Subscribe to help me grow the channel (it means a lot!): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1z6kYs7IylluivERi6TIkQ ********* In today's episode, we'll dive into Boys Over Flowers, a koreaboo’s all time favorite, a classic in the K-drama world, if you will. My problem with Boys Over Flowers, as an adult woman, is that it has aged so very poorly. The whole series centers on couples with a douchebag boyfriend and a fixer-upper girlfriend. The guy becomes a better version of himself at the expense of his female love interest, and later gets the credits for having changed. I also want to explore this idea that the one reason why Boys Over Flowers is so successful is because it reflects the exact opposite of reality, therefore making it the perfect fantasyland for women who suffer from violence in real life. Get ready to dabble into toxic wattpad tropes, realistic dating reflections, and criticism against the patriarchy, all within one session. In simple terms, I’m going to rant. ********* Pop culture context for clueless girlies (you're not alone, don't worry): - 'Boys Over Flowers' is a 2009 South Korean television series starring Goo Hye-sun, Lee Min-ho, Kim Hyun-joong, Kim Bum, and Kim Joon. It is based on the Japanese manga series Hana Yori Dango, telling the story of a working-class girl, Jan-di, who gets tangled up in the lives of a group of wealthy young men in an elite high school. The group is called ‘F4’, led by Goo Jun-pyo, the heir of the largest conglomerate in the country. The other F4 members are Yoon Ji-hoo, the grandson of a former president of Korea; So Yi-jung, a skilled potter whose family owns the country's biggest art museum; and Song Woo-bin, whose family runs the country's largest construction company. The four boys are notorious bullies and players, until Jan-di came along and changed the course of their lives. The series earned record-breaking viewership ratings in South Korea, and later became a cultural phenomenon throughout Asia. - 'Weaponized incompetence' is a form of passive-aggressive behavior where an individual deliberately performs tasks poorly or pretends to be incapable of completing them. This manipulation tactic is often used to avoid responsibility, forcing others to take over and perform the task instead. - 'Married single moms' are women who do everything for their children and the home, as if they were single and didn't have a partner to help. It refers to their partners’ lack of meaningful contribution to the partnership. ********* If you're still here, I'm certain you'll enjoy our tea session.
