In this bonsai video, I talk about Bonsai Soil and everything you need to know when it comes to helping your trees grow and thrive in your local climate.
When I first started in bonsai, I saw many different people using many different types of soil, and it was honestly pretty confusing. In this video, I explain why different growers use different soils, the purpose of each component, and how to easily build a mix that works for you!
I discuss why traditional potting soil doesn’t work well for bonsai, how particle size affects root health, what cation exchange capacity (CEC) is and why it matters, the benefits of biochar, and how soil choice can vary depending on how much time you have to water and care for your trees. I also go over my personal bonsai soil mix and some of the types of Akadama available.
