Eric compares the growth of 3 Japanese Black Pines he started in the Fall of 2019. Tree #1 was grown in a 2" wide x 3" deep container; Trees #2 and #3 in 3"x9" Anderson tree bands.

00:01:22 Eric removes Tree #2 from the Anderson band to look at the roots, which look reasonably healthy. It was in a shared flat. The trunk girth is 3/8". This tree grew in mostly pumice for the top 2/3, with a fine akadama/lava/pumice mixture at the bottom.

00:03:07 Tree #1 has a small root mass and is a small tree, 1/8" trunk girth. It was grown in a perlite and cocoa coir soil mix.

00:04:16 Tree #3 is the largest 2 year old JBP Eric has ever seen! The roots pushed through the Anderson band; the tree was nestled into a flat with coarse perlite. The tree height is 40" and the trunk girth is 7/8-1".

00:05:40 Eric removes Tree #3 from the Anderson band. The soil is coarse perlite and cocoa coir.

00:07:13 Largest doesn't always equal best.

00:08:26 What does examining these three trees teach us? Bigger containers are not always better. To grow the type of tree you want, you need to consider container size, soil combination, and growing technique.

00:10:25 Eric shares which tree he thinks has the best result - do you agree with his assessment? Let us know in the comments!
