President Trump’s proposal to send U.S. citizens — specifically those convicted of violent crimes — to prisons in El Salvador is almost certainly illegal under current U.S. law and the Constitution. Legal experts overwhelmingly agree there’s no statutory or constitutional authority for deporting native-born U.S. citizens or forcibly transferring them to serve sentences in foreign prisons. But would that matter to Trump’s DOJ if they're already ignoring the courts?
