Have you ever been to Bosnia and Herzegovina? If not, you don’t know what you’re missing!
I've been travelling for over 30 years and have visited 44 countries, but Bosnia and Herzegovina remains my number one travel destination.
Bosnia and Herzegovina will impress you with its beautiful nature, rich history and excellent food. I am compltely in love with this country because of all of the above, and most of all because of the friendly people. The prices might also surprise you – in a postiive way, of course, as they are extremely low.
If I went to Bosnia and Herzegovina alone every time, someone could tell me that I only like it because it suits my taste. Since I have taken more than 100 people there and at least 95 % of them absolutely loved it, there is probably at least a 95% chance that you will fall in love with this wonderful country as well.
During this trip to Bosnia, a friend of mine that does video production for a living accompanied me. I owe it completely to him for making this amazing video that you see above. Do you know what this friend told me when we got home? He said: "So far, I've only gone on luxury trips, but now that I went on this low-cost trip with you, I've realized this is even better and more interesting."
Our trip was very short. We took off on Friday afternoon and returned late Sunday evening – well, almost Monday morning, but managed to see incredible things in that short time.
The first place we stopped at was the Željava abandoned military air base. The village of Željava is located in Croatia, right before the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Most of the Željava or KLEK air base, as it was called in the army, is located in Croatia, and a smaller part in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Late in the evening, we arrived to the friendly village of Kulen Vakuf, which lies along the Una River.
The next day we first went for a quick tour of Kulen Vakuf, and then continued toward the famous Štrbački buk waterfall. It is the most powerful waterfall on the Una River. The Una River is also very beautiful.
From there, we continued our way towards Martin Brod. This town also lies along the Una River, where you can see a number of smaller and larger waterfall and cascades.
Our next stop was the town of Drvar. On the way there, we stopped at a beautiful vantage point, from where there is a really beautiful and interesting view of the canyon of the Unac River.
In Drvar, we visited Tito's cliff and went for delicious “chevapchichi”, then continued to Banja Luka, where we arrived late in the evening. We decided to check out the nightlife in Banja Luka and found it vibrant and interesting.
The next day, we visited Banja Luka, the canyon of the Vrbas River as well as the Krupa na Vrbasu village where we saw numerous little mills grinding wheat using the same technique as a 100 year ago.
After visiting Banja Luka, we went to Kozara to see the monument dedicated to the fallen fighters who fought against fascism in the Second World War. We got lost on the way to the monument, which turned out to be a very good thing in the end. Check the video to see why.
We arrived at the monument at dusk, and in the end, we were chased away by the rain. Nevertheless, we had a great time.
I hope to visit Bosnia and Herzegovina again soon!
