KISS Monster Mini Golf in Las Vegas is the crown jewel in the black-light monster mini golf franchise, but the KISS animatronic band at the center of the attraction is not operational after only a year. Owners Christina and Pat Vitagliano want Distortions to a create better, stronger, faster, more realistic 4-piece animatronics to replace the existing band. The crew has to figure out how to create the signature movements for each band member right down to Gene Simmons' head tilt, how to attach existing foam bodies to the armature that still move like humans, how to make the licensed KISS masks fit and look realistic, and manage to pull out the old band and program the new band during the 3 hours per day that Vegas sleeps a day. The Darkness in St. Louis, Missouri, is a legendary haunt celebrating being open for two decades. To kick it up a notch for their 20th anniversary, owners Larry & Jim have spent over $150,000 on the renovation of the haunt and asked Distortions to bring the demon on their logo to life to welcome all the terrified masses. The enormous head-weighing in at over 800 pounds while being sculpted-buckles one table, cracks another, and proves to be the highlight of the haunt for first timers and professional haunters from all over the world. And Ed's romantic side rears its distorted head when he surprises Marsha with a vow renewal ceremony for their anniversary at the Hotter Than Hell Wedding Chapel on site at KISS MMG.
Making Monsters is a fascinating look at the world of animatronics and mask makers. Ed Edmunds and his small staff work tirelessly to create some of the scariest animatronics and "frightronics" the haunt industry has ever seen.
