Explanation of this alternate universe (AU) : Contains spoilers.

The boy, his name unknown, was born into a traveling performer family. His mother, a performer, passed away during childbirth and the boy was left to be raised by his father, a former doctor and a few other traveling performers the father and late mother worked with. In the midst of their traveling, they were brutally attacked by vicious vampires. The crew faced great loss and the boy was left as the only survivor. He was soon picked up by a Catholic Church, before his death was faked by Doctor Moreau. He was renamed No.69 and for many years was used as a vital part of the Doctor's cruel experiments that he underwent on many children in attempts to turn them into vampires. Throughout these years, the boy experienced the worst of mental, physical and emotional trauma and although he knew that with enough effort and his remarkably smart mind, he would be able to escape - he did not try to, to keep other children that Doctor Moreau had threatened to kidnap if he did escape, safe.

Eventually, he met No. 71 or Mikhail, another child who had been tricked and captured to be experimented on. After much time attempting to push the younger child away, the boy ultimately came to regard Mikhail as his younger brother.

Mikhail and the boy were soon considered subjects for opportunity when they were discovered to not have rejected the Vampire of the Blue Moon, Vanitas’ blood. In a brutal experiment, Doctor Moreau tied the Books of Vanitas to them before they were saved by Vanitas, the one and only vampire of the blue moon. Vanitas accepted the children quickly as one of their own kin, and Mikhail followed suit. The boy, on the other hand, remained distrustful to Vanitas due to a long hatred of vampires who were the cause of his family's death and experimentation.

After a while, Vanitas revealed that they would die soon due to the physical torture their bodies had experienced during the experimentations but if they became the vampires kin, they would be able to survive. Mikhail accepted, but the boy refused and after he was marked by the vampire as one of his kin, the boy killed Vanitas and thought that the event of him killing Vanitas had killed Mikhail too.

In an act of emotional distress, the boy who believed himself to be the last kin of Vanitas, the vampire of the blue moon, attempted suicide.

The boy did not die. He was awoken within the Port Mafia by Mori, the current doctor of the Port Mafia who had saved him from his attempted suicide.

The boy introduced himself as Vanitas, a name he now believed he had a duty to honour as the last of Vanitas’ kin. Mori saw potential in Vanitas, and embedded him within the Port Mafia, teaching him everything in a way the port mafia knew so well. Eventually, Vanitas became Mori’s witness for the death of the boss and Mori became the boss of the mafia instead with Vanitas, or Dazai Osamu as his new second hand man.

Dazai Osamu remained in the port mafia, becoming the youngest executive ever known throughout the port mafia’s history. He was diligent and cruel - the perfect facade he needed to hide the ongoing pain and distress he felt every second he was still moving, breathing, living.

During his time in the mafia, he met Oda. A kind man who despite being a part of the mafia, was only looking for a way to escape and not harm or kill anyone else. Dazai was inspired by Oda, and quickly warmed up to him during their meetings with Ango in the tavern they frequented.

It slightly reminded Dazai of the families he never experienced properly.

Well, entirely considering this family did not last long either.

In the eighteenth year of Dazai’s tiresome life - Oda passed away after Ango betrayed the mafia and Dazai was left, once again to mourn for his passed family member.

Following Oda’s last words, Dazai left the mafia and soon joined the detective agency, an organization that was for helping people.
