According to historical accounts, Queen Maya Devi, the mother of Siddhartha Gautama, gave birth to him in Lumbini around 563 BCE. Legend has it that while on her way to her parental home, she stopped in the Lumbini Grove and delivered the future Buddha under a sal tree. The newborn, taking seven steps, proclaimed that this would be his last birth, marking the beginning of his path towards enlightenment.
Emperor Ashoka of the Maurya Dynasty played a crucial role in spreading Buddhism, and he visited Lumbini in the 3rd century BCE. He erected a commemorative pillar with inscriptions to honor the sacred birthplace. Over time, various stupas, monasteries, and other structures were built in Lumbini, making it a center for Buddhist pilgrimage.
In the late 20th century, UNESCO designated Lumbini as a World Heritage Site, ensuring its preservation and recognition as a place of immense cultural and historical importance. Today, Lumbini stands as a symbol of peace and enlightenment, attracting visitors seeking spiritual and historical enrichment.
