We are using OpenWRT to build a managed switch with VLAN functionality from a scrap Wifi Router (D-Link DIR-600) - in the second part of the video we will enable wifi and see how we can bridge Wifi interfaces into a VLAN on OpenWrt. You can still use your old Wifi Router as a switch - separate LAN segments with VLANs. You can separate and/or extend your network over multiple Wifi Access points, for example extend your guest network using a second Access point on or behind the managed switch by mapping the right VLAN. Rather than throwing the router away use it as a diy managed switch.
