Get ready to witness the power of the 1966 Chevrolet Corvair Yenko Stinger, built to destroy the competition. This classic muscle car is a force to be reckoned with on the road!
A Little History
The Chevrolet Corvair Yenko Stinger was a high-performance variant of the Corvair developed by Don Yenko for SCCA racing in the mid-1960s. Here's some key information about this unique car:
Development and Purpose
Don Yenko, a Pennsylvania car dealer and racer, created the Yenko Stinger to compete against Carroll Shelby's Mustangs in SCCA racing1
He chose the Corvair as a base due to its lightweight rear-engine design, which gave it a 500-pound weight advantage over other options
Production and Variants
Yenko produced 100 Stingers by January 1966 to meet SCCA homologation requirements
The cars were sold in four stages, differentiated by power levels
Stage I: 160 hp
Stage II: 190 hp
Stage III: 220 hp
Stage IV: 240 hp (full race version)3
There were rumors of a Stage V version with fuel injection producing around 250 hp, but information on this is limited
Performance and Specifications
The Yenko Stinger was based on the Corvair Corsa model
It featured a modified flat-six engine, with power ranging from 160 to 240 hp depending on the stage1
The car weighed approximately 2,100 pounds, making it very quick for its time
All Stingers came equipped with heavy-duty suspension, four-speed transmission, quicker steering ratio, and limited-slip differentials
Racing Success
The Yenko Stinger competed in SCCA's D Production class, achieving some notable successes:
In its first race in January 1966, a Stinger finished second, just one second behind the dominant Triumph TR42
By the end of the 1966 season, Stinger drivers had won multiple division championships

Legacy
The Yenko Stinger's production was short-lived, ending with the introduction of the Camaro in 1967
In total, Yenko built just over 100 Stingers and outfitted a few dozen customer cars with Stinger packages3
Today, these cars are rare and highly sought after by collectors, with values for top examples estimated between $65,000 and $100,0001
The Yenko Stinger represents an interesting "what-if" in American automotive history, showcasing a path not taken in sports car development that bears some similarity to the enduring Porsche 911 concept
Chevy delivered the standard COPO Camaros with dog-dish hubcaps and no exterior badging; not even the engine was identified as a 427. Yenko ordered his with 15-inch rally wheels, bigger front roll bar, and 140 mph-speedometer, then dressed them with "sYc" (Yenko Super Car) insignia and striping, and made available mags, gauges, headers, and other items that could push the price past $4,600. As delivered,
Yenko Camaros turned effortless mid-13s. Most were fitted with headers and slicks, even for street work, and in this form recorded 11.94-secomd ETs at 114 mph.
