Not everyone knows that Bulgaria, in addition to warm beaches in summer, also offers winter ski resorts. In the country, mountains are no less popular than seaside holidays. A winter holiday in Bulgaria will be remembered not only for the snowy peaks of the Pirin and Rila mountains, quality service, but also for the authentic Balkan cuisine, as well as a variety of excursion programs.
Bulgaria provides excellent infrastructure for ski holidays, with many Russian-speaking guides and instructors. Moreover, prices for ski resort services here are significantly lower than in other European analogues, and the flight is relatively short.
The ski season in Bulgaria lasts from December to the end of March or mid-April. Winter temperatures vary from minus 8–10 °C to plus 2–4 °C. The coldest and snowiest month is January, with a dense layer of snow already from the end of December.
The main ski resorts in Bulgaria - Bansko, Borovets, Pamporovo and Vitosha - are located in the west of the country, near the capital. Bansko, considered the fastest growing ski resort in Eastern Europe, offers stable snow cover, varied slopes and high-quality equipment. Borovets, the oldest resort, is surrounded by pine forests and offers a variety of mountain peaks and trails. Pamporovo, the sunniest resort, is located at the foot of Mount Snezhanka and provides ski slopes of all levels of difficulty. Vitosha, just 20 km from Sofia, has excellent infrastructure and offers slopes for all categories of skiers.
The slopes of the ski resorts in Bulgaria are suitable for both beginners and professionals. Although blue and red runs predominate, a variety of winter activities are also available, such as ice skating, snow tubing, snowboarding and others.
Typically, travelers get to resorts through Sofia, where there are regular flights. Then a transfer is required. An alternative is a direct bus tour.
