Chapter 4 is all about curve sketching. 4.1 deals with increasing and decreasing functions which can be determined by looking at or determining the slope of the tangents to the curve over certain intervals. First you will find the critical values and test if and how the slopes of the tangents change on either side of the critical values. If the slopes go from positive to negative then you have a maximum value at that critical point and if it goes from negative to positive then you will have a minimum value. If there is NO change (i.e. both negative or both positive slopes on each side of the critical value then there is neither a min or a max. I will do several examples from your textbook that show the different types of questions that give many students have difficulty. The lesson itself is pretty straightforward but the questions are not. I will do 1c on this video and numbers 7 and 8 in the next.
