Calm Carving | Plum Eating Spoon From a Crook

A cloudy day well spent. I carry my Silky Super Accel 21 with me whenever I go on walks and here is why. I came across a plum tree with a couple of limbs tha had fallen in the summer heat with the weight of the plums. The same fate that the ones in our garden had. Thee branches were a bit larger and had some nice sections of crooked branches. Crooked benches make for great eating spoons and the relationship between bowl and handle follows the grain, meaning that the resulting spoon is not only very strong, but often wonderfully characterised by its "crook". From the plum I harvested 7 sections that I imagined a spoon to live. I then processed the remaining branches into manageable sections and put them in the hedge for either habitat, easy removal and so that they weren't in the way for the next plum harvest! I then tidied the shoots at the base of the tree so that it can concentrate its energy into the next growing season. Some wild mint provided a beautiful aroma as I packed by bag and left for the workshop. I know plum to be very twisty on its split, and deceptively so too - often what seems to be rather straight, is really not! Though I harvested 6 crooks and 1 straight branch, the twists were strong in some meaning that I only realistically use two or three. I chose my favourite of the three to carve into a very cranky eating spoon using an axe, pocket saw, straight knife and spoon knife.
