Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of England and political novice, is to be Canada’s next prime minister after being overwhelmingly elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party.
Carney, 59, who has also led the Bank of Canada, will succeed Justin Trudeau after receiving 85.9 per cent of the votes, with 151,899 party members having cast their ballots.
The former Goldman Sachs banker, who has never served in Canada’s parliament or held elected office, will become prime minister in the coming days, bringing an end to Trudeau’s near-decade in power.
