The relationship between animals and their environs has become one of the paramount political concerns of our time. At "Animalhouse: Animals and Their Environs," the Philosophy Department Graduate Student Conference at The New School for Social Research, participants questioned if and how philosophy’s treatment of animals and their environs can help us make sense of our current situation. "What Was 'the Animal'?" was a keynote conference address given on April 1, 2021. **** Cary Wolfe is Bruce and Elizabeth Dunlevie Professor of English and the director of the Center for Critical and Cultural Theory at Rice University. He is a leading scholar in posthumanism and critical animal studies. He is the author of, among others, What Is Posthumanism? (2009), Before the Law: Humans and Other Animals in a Biopolitical Frame, (2012), and Animal Rites: American Culture, the Discourse of Species, and Posthuman Theory (2003). His most recent book is Ecological Poetics, or, Wallace Stevens' Birds (2020). Dominic Pettman (respondent) is University Professor of Media and New Humanities at The New School.
