For over fifty years, the Cass Scenic Railroad has shown millions of people the splendor of West Virginia's mountains, on its long, winding route to the top of Bald Knob. This is not the only railroad; running north is the old Greenbrier Subdivision of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, which once connected the towns of Cass and Durbin with the rest of the North American rail network.

In 1985, a devastating flood washed out most of the track alongside the river. In the last few years, efforts from both the Cass Scenic Railroad and the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley companies resulted in the line being 99% rebuilt by 2019. To commemorate this milestone, that year's Rail Heritage Weekend was staged along the finished sections of line, with the southern half featuring newly restored Climax #9, and the northern half with Heisler #6. Each engine had their own line of freight cars to tote through the forested mountains, making for a beautiful sight in this beautiful part of the world.
