Anna Gutu and Gina Marie Rzucidlo were striving to make history as the first American women to conquer all 14 peaks on Earth that exceed 8,000 meters in height. Anna Gutu, a seasoned mountaineer, was a proud member of the Elite Exped team, an accomplished group of climbers who regularly reach summits across the globe. Elite Exped specializes in tailoring guided experiences on some of the world's most challenging mountains. Gutu and Rzucidlo found themselves engaged in an intense competition, each striving to become the first American woman to conquer the formidable challenge of completing the 14 8,000ers thousanders. Both had already successfully summited 13 out of the 14 towering peaks, leaving only the daunting Shishapangma as their ultimate goal. Rzucidlo, hailing from New York City, had already climbed Gasherbrum I and II, Nanga Parbat, and Manaslu during the summer. She now faced the challenge of conquering the last two peaks, one of them being Shishapangma. As fellow American climber Chris Warner pointed out, Rzucidlo had initially undertaken a multi-year endeavor to complete the 8 thousanders. However, the competitive spirit reached its zenith in the current year as the race for this achievement intensified. Tibet became a battleground of competition, with several climbers, not just the two American women, vying for their place in the annals of mountaineering history.
Anna Gutu and Gina Marie Rzucidlo found themselves camped near the summit of Shishapangma, perched just below the treacherous death zone. They commenced their summit push in the early morning hours, a mere 90 meters or 300 feet from the pinnacle, following the main route to the top. It was at this critical juncture, without any forewarning, that devastating avalanches bore down upon the climbing parties.
