Full episode of CBS' long-running Sunday morning newsmagazine, recorded Sunday, April 3, 1994 from KTBC, the then-CBS affiliate in Austin.
This was the last episode of stalwart anchor Charles Kuralt, who shocked by many by retiring at age 59. Kuralt had been the original host of the program since it launched in 1979, and had been with CBS News since 1957. Kuralt was also known for his long-running "On The Road" segment, which CBS would later revive with Steve Hartman.
Kuralt was succeeded by Charles Osgood, who was introduced to the audience in the segment starting at 59:38. Osgood would present the broadcast for over 20 years, surpassing Kuralt as the program's longest-tenured host.
The format of the program, like CBS' other well-known newsmagazine "60 Minutes," has not been heavily altered since its 1979 inception, compared to other newscasts. This has helped make it the most-watched Sunday morning news program for decades, with a focus on lighter, in-depth features as opposed to hard news items.
The open sequence has mostly remained the same since the program's inception. The two most notable changes (aside from the eventual conversion to high definition) are the removal of the days of the week from the open, and the updates to its theme music "Abblasen". Though, all of the re-recordings have been note-by-note to the original, and have just been done to make the audio sound less dated with current technology.
Kuralt passed away July 4, 1997 due to heart failure.
Reports/interviews are included from Barry Petersen (still with CBS to this day), John Leonard, Eugenia Zukerman, Bob Simon, and Bill Geist.
