The death of the dictator and his wife was bluntly presented by the "revolutionary" leaders as a Christmas present to the Romanian people. Two days later, Nicolae and Elena were buried in unmarked graves in a cemetery on the outskirts of Bucharest as images of the “trial” and execution circled the world. Barely a month earlier, Ceausescu had however been re-elected without the slightest opposition, without the slightest nuance of criticism, first secretary of the Romanian Communist Party.
