To celebrate their 100th birthday, the British loudspeaker powerhouse that is Celestion have chosen to reissue one of their most classic and revered AlNiCo speakers.....the Silver. Derived from a radio speaker back in the 60s, and reengineered to be robust enough for use in a guitar combo amplifier, it's 'the' speaker for the classic AC30 and JTM45/Bluesbreaker sound.
The AlNiCo Blue has always been said to be a recreation of that original 15W driver, and the Gold is a similar-sounding higher powered 50W version of it. But when Celestion released the 35W Ruby a few years ago to slot nicely in between the two power ratings, it.......well, let's just say it was quite a differently voiced speaker, and it wasn't to everybody's tastes.
But now, the OG Silver is back...with a few mod cons and an increased power rating to make it more versatile, the Celestion 100 is said to be a Greatest Hits of all of their in-house examples of those old Silvers. Can it bring that timeless AlNiCo 'Kerrrrrrang' that we know and love? Does it get close to the old Silvers? Let's find out!
