Challenges in Adapting to Urban Flooding

Video Not Working? Fix It Now

Katherine Nelson, assistant professor of geography, discusses the growing challenges related to flooding, one of the most costly types of natural hazard events in the US. She focused on inland urban flooding issues and described the influence of urbanization, land-use, and climate trends on these events. Various adaptation and policy responses to flooding problems and the intended, and unintended, consequences of these responses were also highlighted. This talk was presented for students participating in the capstone course of the Natural Resources and Environmental Science (NRES) Secondary Major and was open to the public as part of the NRES Seminar Series. The NRES Secondary Major and its seminar series are generously supported by the Office of the Provost, College of Agriculture, College of Arts and Sciences, and Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, and Department of Geography.
