In this video, I’m using the subtractive, or ‘Reductive’, method of tonal drawing of fabric starting with a toned ground, using vine charcoal, then creating a gesture drawing of the fabric with charcoal pencils. From there, I use a variety of erasers to pick out the varying degrees of lighter values, leaving the toned ground as the mid-tones and reflective light of the drawing. Vine charcoal and charcoal pencils are also used to add darker values in this fabric study.
