Life At Sea In The Merchant Marine Aboard A Cargo Ship
Modern cargo ships still utilize celestial navigation on a daily basis by taking azimuths of the sun or other celestial bodies to verify gyro compass error. Utilizing the Nautical Almanac or computer programs such as Sky Mate, watch officers are able to compare the observed azimuths to the true azimuths to ensure the compasses are accurate for navigation.
