▼About the Chichibu Night Festival The Chichibu Night Festival, a December speciality of Chichibu City and an annual festival held at Chichibu Shrine, is counted as one of Japan's three major float festivals, along with the Gion Festival in Kyoto and the Takayama Festival in Hida.
There are records that the festival took place during the Kanbun era (1661-1672) of the Edo period, so it has a history of over 300 years.
During the Edo period, a Chichibu silk market was held along with the festival, which is said to have greatly enriched the Chichibu economy.
It is also called the Silkworm Festival. Time has passed, and the silk market is no longer held, but
It remains the final year's resolution for the people living in Chichibu.
It has been popularly known as "Yomatsuri" (Night Festival) and "Myoken-sama."
Two Kasaboko floats and four floats (Nationally Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties) are pulled through the town to the sound of heroic festival music.
Special stages were set up on both sides of the float to host local plays (Chichibu Kabuki) and dances by the local Hanayagi and Kineya families.
Along with the Chichibu Shrine Kagura, it has been designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property by the government as "The Yatai Event and Kagura of the Chichibu Festival."
