In this video: First aid for a child who is choking.
First, ensure that the scene is safe. Check if the child is responsive by tapping their shoulder and shouting, "Are you okay?" If they don't respond, immediately call for help by calling 911 or asking someone else to call. If you're alone, give two minutes of CPR before calling for help.
Next, tilt the head back and lift the chin to open the airway. Look, listen, and feel for breathing. If the child is not breathing or is only gasping, begin chest compressions.
For a child, use one hand to perform compressions. Place the heel of your hand on the center of the chest, between the nipples, and press down about two inches deep. Perform 30 compressions at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
After 30 compressions, give two rescue breaths. Pinch the nose and tilt the head back, and give two breaths, each lasting one second. Watch for the chest to rise and fall with each breath.
Continue compressions and breaths until help arrives or the child shows signs of life. Remember to switch with someone else every two minutes to prevent fatigue.
