Our journey begins at the iconic Liziba Station, a marvel of urban engineering. Nestled between the sixth and eighth floors of a towering 19-story residential building, the station draws many tourists. The unique sight of a monorail train passing directly through the building creates a moment that everyone wants to capture. As you stand there, watching the train glide smoothly through the structure with the sky as its backdrop, the blend of modern infrastructure and Chongqing's mountainous landscape offers a surreal and unforgettable experience.
Leaving Liziba, we head towards the bustling heart of Chongqing—the Yuzhong District. This district is the core of the city, a peninsula where the mighty Jialing and Yangtze Rivers converge. It’s Chongqing’s political, economic, and cultural centre, with its towering skyscrapers dominating the skyline. Walking between these massive structures, you feel the pulse of the city. Companies line the streets, showcasing their latest products with live demonstrations. Pedestrians pause to test new gadgets, while enormous digital billboards on nearly every corner flash vibrant advertisements, giving the city an electric, modern energy.
The streets are alive with activity, and the summer heat adds to the bustling atmosphere. Despite the towering buildings and rapid pace of life, there's a certain balance between the past and future that makes this district fascinating. The vivid colours of the billboards and the cool breeze from the nearby rivers keep the walk invigorating as we move deeper into the district.
Our next stop is the famous Hongya Dong, a remarkable 11-story stilted complex located in the Jiefangbei commercial district. With its traditional Chinese architectural style, Hongya Dong stands in stark contrast to the modern high-rises around it, offering a glimpse into Chongqing’s cultural heritage. The complex is home to a lively food market where the scent of Chongqing's famous hotpot and spicy street snacks fills the air. Spice shops line the streets, their shelves overflowing with colourful chilies and aromatic herbs.
Here, you can immerse yourself in the culture by hiring a traditional Chinese dress and posing against the backdrop of this stilted wonder. As you wander through the levels, you’ll find countless opportunities to take in the charm of Chongqing’s blend of old and new, with each floor offering unique shops, restaurants, and incredible views.
As our walk continues, we head towards the banks of the Jialing River, where the Qiansimen Bridge stands proudly over the water. This modern suspension bridge is one of the most impressive sights in the city, its sleek design standing out against the ever-changing skyline of Chongqing. The bridge connects the Yuzhong Peninsula with the newer districts, symbolising Chongqing's rapid expansion and modernisation.
This walk through Chongqing’s CBD is a vibrant journey through time, culture, and modern innovation, leaving you with lasting impressions of one of China’s most dynamic cities.
