Chowk means market in Hindi, and Chowk market is one of Lucknow's oldest markets and residential areas. The Chowk market is located in old Lucknow and has well-defined areas for unrestricted driving. This is the location where you get a glimpse of Lucknow's cultural and historical heritage. In this walking tour video, I am exploring the crowded lane of Chowk from Gol Darwaza to Akbari Gate.
GOL DARWAZA, a famous gateway, came up during the regime of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula. It used to be the most famous landmark of the city. It came up at a time when Chowk market–a typical Indian bazaar street replete with unbelievably narrow houses and large markets was the centre of awadh. The imposing darwaza dwarfed all and gave some semblance of structure to the area.
The AKBARI DARWAZA stands tall in the densely populated area of Chowk, where once Lakhnavi Tehzeeb ruled. The Akbari Darwaza provided access to the Chowk, Shahganj, and Mahmud Nagar neighbourhoods. During the reign of Mughal Emperor Jalal-ud-din-Muhammad Akbar, this Chowk Street gateway was constructed.
