The project of singer/songwriter Greg Gonzalez, Cigarettes After Sex transforms the highs and lows of love and lust into hushed ambient pop. The band's hushed, dreamy music -- which centers on Gonzalez' smoky vocals and echoing guitars -- earned a devoted international fan base in the mid-2010s. Elegantly crafted singles, EPs, and viral YouTube videos led up to their 2017 eponymous debut, which was certified gold in multiple countries. Though Cigarettes After Sex polished their sound slightly on 2019's Cry, Gonzalez continued the project's languid, haunting mood on 2022's Daniele Luppi collaboration Charm of Pleasure and the Tejano and soft-rock inspired songs of 2024's X's.
Gonzalez began making music when he was 10, trying out different instruments and styles for size until he combined the hypnotic sounds of Erik Satie, Ennio Morricone, and Cocteau Twins with the concise imagery of e.e. cummings and Richard Brautigan's poetry. He formed Cigarettes After Sex almost accidentally in 2008 while living in El Paso, Texas. Then a student at University of Texas, he was experimenting with capturing the spacious sound of recording songs in a four-story stairwell at the university. During this time, he honed the project's sound with songs that appeared on 2009's I Can See You and 2011's Romans 13:9 before releasing Cigarettes After Sex's debut EP, 2012's I.
After relocating to Brooklyn, Gonzalez continued work on the band, enlisting the help of a loose cast of collaborators including Phillip Tubbs, Randy Miller, Jacob Tomsky, Steve Herrada, Emily Davis, and Greg Leeah. Output from the collective appeared mostly in the form of singles and EPs, including 2015's "Affection" (which featured a reworking of REO Speedwagon's power ballad "Keep on Loving You" as its B-side) and immensely popular YouTube clips.
Following a swell of attention online, Cigarettes After Sex began to work on a full-length debut. Largely recorded in front of a small audience with Miller, Tomsky, and Tubbs, June 2017's Cigarettes After Sex offered a fuller-soundng version of the band's twangy heartache. Charting in the U.S., Australia, and several European countries, the album was certified gold in the U.S., U.K., and four other nations; in France, it went platinum. The single "Apocalypse" was an indie hit in parts of Europe, landing on Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart in the U.S. (number 16). In 2018, they issued the single "Crush," a track they'd recorded during the same sessions as their debut.
While on tour in support of Cigarettes After Sex, Gonzalez continued to write songs for the band's next full-length. Recorded in Mallorca, October 2019's Cry featured the same lineup as the project's debut album as well as slightly smoother production values. With a push from the single "Heavenly," the album charted across Europe, hitting number one in Portugal. The following year, the band issued the single "You're All I Want." Gonzalez then teamed up with composer Daniele Luppi for the EP Charm of Pleasure, released on Monitor Pop/Slowplay/Verve in September 2022. Its gentle, symphonic atmospheres featured instruments like harp and mallet percussion in addition to synths and strings. Two months later, Cigarettes After Sex returned with "Pistol," their first new music in over two years. Two more stand-alone singles, "Bubblegum" and "Stop Waiting," as well as a cover of Radiohead's "Motion Picture Soundtrack," appeared the following year.
Early in 2024, Cigarettes After Sex delivered "Tejano Blue" -- inspired Gonzalez's years living in El Paso -- which was the lead single from that July's X's. Backed by Miller and Tomsky, Gonzalez added subtle soft-rock and Tejano influences to songs that explored the aftermath of a four-year relationship.
