This tour is part of Joolz Guides' new book, Rather Splendid London Pub Walks, where you can discover more walking tours that explore London’s fascinating history, culture, and of course, its best pubs!
Whether you’re a history lover, a local or visitor wanting to discover a new part of London, or simply a fan of a good pint, this walk has something for everyone.
A Journey Through Clapham's Rich History
Clapham is an area with deep historical roots, and this walk takes you past some of its most iconic landmarks. The centerpiece is Clapham Common, a lush, sprawling green space that has been a focal point of the area for centuries. At the heart of the Common, you’ll find the Clapham Bandstand, a beautiful Victorian structure that once hosted outdoor concerts and public events. Over the years, Clapham has transformed from a rural village to a trendy part of London, yet it retains much of its rich history and charm.
As you walk, you’ll learn about the famous people and events that shaped this area. David Bowie, the legendary rock star, was photographed in Clapham during the 1960s, and he even wrote a song at the Peartree Cafe! You’ll also hear about the River Falconbrook, once a vital waterway that ran through Clapham before being covered over during the 19th century.
Clapham’s connection to British history is further enriched by figures such as Samuel Pepys, whose famous diaries mention the area. You’ll also discover that Captain Cook’s wife, Elizabeth, lived in Clapham, adding a maritime connection to the area’s eclectic history.
Pubs and Stops Along the Way
What better way to experience a neighborhood than by enjoying a pint at its local pubs? Along the walk, we stop at several local pubs, each with its own character and story. From historic watering holes to contemporary gastropubs, each stop offers a chance to rest, soak up the local atmosphere, and enjoy the company of fellow pub-goers. These pubs are a true reflection of Clapham’s vibrant, community-focused spirit.
Lavender Hill, The Clapham Grand, & More
The walk takes us through Lavender Hill, a lively street that’s home to independent shops, cafes, and restaurants. We also pass the Clapham Grand, a historic venue that has been a staple of Clapham’s entertainment scene for over a century. From live music and comedy shows to movie screenings, the Clapham Grand has hosted it all and remains a key landmark of the area.
Hidden History: Deep Level Shelters & The Omnibus Theatre
One of the more unusual parts of this walk is the story of the deep-level shelters, which were built during World War II as underground bunkers to protect Londoners from air raids. These shelters, some of which are still intact today, provide a fascinating glimpse into Clapham’s wartime history. Along the way, you’ll also hear about the Omnibus Theatre, a thriving arts space that contributes to Clapham’s cultural landscape.
This walk is just one of the many detailed routes you’ll find in Joolz Guides' new book, Rather Splendid London Pub Walks. Discover more walks that explore the rich history, quirky landmarks, and, of course, the finest pubs in London.
