Widely regarded as Australia’s premier speedway, the Perth Motorplex has just celebrated 25 years since it opened its gates.
Built to replace the iconic Claremont Speedway, which closed in March 2000 after an incredible 73-year run, the road to the Motorplex wasn’t without its challenges.
In this interview, Con and Gavin Migro open up about the moments that shaped the shift—from Con’s early sense in the mid-90s that the sport would need a new home, to the search for a location, a 9-month build, a chaotic opening night that included a blackout and just 15 Sprint Cars, traffic chaos, unhappy fans, and serious financial concerns.
Now, 25 years on, Gavin Migro serves as General Manager of the entire facility. He shares his perspective on what’s holding the sport back, the lessons learned over two decades, and how his team is working to support other tracks and promoters across Australia.
