In this wild adventure, my friends and I set out to tackle the Mt. Wilson Traverse, located just outside of Las Vegas in the Spring Mountains of Nevada. This 7,071-foot peak is a challenging rock climbing scramble that tests the limits of endurance, and it’s safe to say we came way too close to the edge.
What was meant to be a thrilling and challenging climb quickly turned into a near-death experience. With no water left, dead phones, and a rapidly descending sun, we had to rely on our instincts to navigate the treacherous rock faces. We pushed ourselves to the brink as we scrambled over jagged rocks, ran out of daylight, and finally finished the climb in total darkness.
To make matters worse, I accidentally ripped my insulin pump out during the climb, causing my blood sugar to skyrocket. With the risk of going into diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), I had to perform impromptu diabetic surgery along First Creek on the descent to insert a new insulin pump site. It was a stressful and time-sensitive situation, but I was able to get things under control just in time to keep the climb from becoming an even bigger disaster.
This video captures the terrifying moments of being stranded in the wild with no way to communicate, but also the beauty and danger of Mt. Wilson, which sits at 7,071 feet with a prominence just shy of 4,000 feet. Located just 30 miles west of Las Vegas, this peak is a hidden gem that demands respect from even the most experienced climbers.
