I have been curious about the tissue culture propagation for some time and today we dive into it with special guest Jeremy Spath of Hidden Agave Nursery where we take a brief look into how he operates his boutique agave nurseries laboratory. One thing that has fascinated me about the plants in nature compared to the trade and hobby is that in nature the morphological variability is all over the map within plant populations. When you go to your local nursery things tend to look pretty cookie cutter. Big box nurseries use tissue culture to propagate large scale clones of popular selections. Whereas here at Hidden Agave Nursery, Jeremy is using it to propagate his unique and unusual agave hybrids which allows him to make small batches of his exquisite selections of his in house hybrids. Super cool to see a agave that grows in Oaxaca Mexico hybrid with an Agave that is native to Californias Mojave desert.
