History bites
Bernalda is a hilltop town located in the province of Matera between two rivers, the Bradano and Basento.
The plateau was originally settled by the Greeks, until the 15th century it was known as ‘Camarda’, reflecting the need of the inhabitants to live close to the lands they cultivated.
Bernalda rises long after its nearby Metaponto and Policoro, only around 1497, on the ruins of the ancient city of Camarda, an agglomeration of houses to which the population of Metaponto moved, around the end of the 3rd century B.C. following the destruction suffered by the Romans. Bernalda was founded by Baron Bernardino de Bernaudo, secretary of King Alfonso II of Aragon, who decided to move the village of Camarda to the castle area. It was granted the title of ‘City’ in 1735 when Carlo III spent a night in the castle on his journey to his coronation in Palermo. The castle has four circular bastions and a square tower of Norman origin.
After the unification of Italy and the end of the banditry, Bernalda undergoes a phase of depopulation, but in time it will repopulate until the present day when it has become an important historical destination to visit in Basilicata. The castle was probably built by the Normans in the 11th century and restored by the Aragonese during their domination, when it was enlarged, fortified and protected with a moat and a drawbridge. On the west side there is a thin square tower considered more ancient than the other towers of round shape. The façade of the Castle that overlooks the Mother Church is the result of a later restoration (From wikipedia).
