This was high wind sailboat racing in Buzzards Bay at its finest. Coconuts took first place in the Mattapoisett Yacht Club's 34th annual Spring Round the Bay - long distance race. With challenging winds of 20 to 30 knots, gusting to 38, it was a spirited ride. This year's course took advantage of the high winds and covered 26 miles. Starting at Nye's Ledge, outside of Mattapoisett harbor the race course covered West Island, Weepecket Island, Woods Hole, Cleveland Ledge off Falmouth, Centerboard Shoals off Marion, then the final upwind drive past Angelica Point to the finish line at Nye Ledge. A number of boats dropped out with equipment failures due to the high wind conditions. Those that remained had lots of bumps and smiles along the way.
