Colas Retrieve Stock from Eastriggs MOD. Charlie Saves the Day! Unique WDV wagon. 22 February 25 Away from Carlisle again! North of Carlisle Yard, and west of Gretna Junction, on the former Glasgow & South Western line to Dumfries, Kilmarnock and Glasgow are the Eastriggs MOD exchange sidings. Once connecting to an MOD armaments site dating back to 1916 as part of the massive Gretna munitions factory and closed around 15 years ago, it is now operated as storage by Rail Sidings Limited. The weather has been atrocious recently and the temporary shelter over the unique Network Rail Winter Development Vehicle and its support coach is in a precarious state. Colas are moving these to Carlisle Yard. Unusual for around Carlisle, Colas have sent a Class 66! This will involve a bit of shunting as the shelter canvas is held down by additional straps across one of the exchange sidings limiting what can be done. Not a simple operation, with three snowploughs and a Class 769 unit also present. Out on a Network Rail headshunt are a pair of barrier vehicles which were left here by Rail Adventure Class 43s on 20th February, Who or what is Charlie? Rail Sidings Limited have, I think, hired a 4-wheel Diesel Hydraulic shunter. I've not seen it before - definitely not at Eastriggs.
