Today's video is about a relatively rare but bold and colourful group of plants for dry and sunny UK gardens, cold hardy Aloes. Dramatic succulents with unusual forms, fleshy leaves and vibrant flowers, these are definitely a great choice for raised beds, arid or desert style borders, pots and containers plus they look great with palms, yuccas, agaves and Mediterranean style planting. In the video I look at a very hardy and easy to grow garden succulent Aloe striatula (now Aloiampelos striatula), a clumping drought tolerant plant with bright yellow flowers, Aloe aristata (now Aristaloe aristata), a cool little succulent for rockeries, container displays or planting around palms and those little crevices in the garden. I then look at the dramatic spiral Aloe - Aloe polyphylla, one I've grown from seed. Easy to germinate in water and relatively quick to grow, this is definitely an interesting and unusual succulent to grow for the amazing natural spiral pattern. I then look at a giant hybrid tree aloe, the amazing, rare and fast growing Aloe hercules, a cross between Aloe barberae and Aloe dichotoma. Hard to track down but this is a seriously cool plant! Is it hardy in the North of the UK, probably not, but is it's definitely a plant rarity with the potential to be a giant in no time! I hope the gives you some ideas to add more succulents and unusual plants to your sunny borders this year, they work great with bold late summer flowers, grasses and other architectural planting.
