I've got one of my favorite people helping me out today. You all know him and love him - my son, Trent. Today we are working on collection through transitions. COLLECTION Collection starts in the hindquarters. "Hustle" in the hindquarters, and softening up in the front end creates collection because it rounds up his back and puts him in a position to do whatever we need him to do. To achieve collection, drive the horse forward into the bit using your legs and body energy. Ask him to soften his nose using your reins, while resisting any urge to pull. Be FAIR: when he tries, recognize it, and exaggerate your release. Remember to keep your eyes up and look where you are going. Feel what is going on in your hands and your body. COLLECTION THROUGH TRANSITIONS Keep your hands low and slow. Always roll back to the outside of your circle - it'll help you get set up for the correct lead. Relax and melt to a standstill, as opposed to throwing your weight back and bracing for a stop. FAIRNESS Being fair to our horses means setting them up so they can win. We set them up so they know what is expected of them. Many times being fair is helping set others up for success. This is often countercultural to the world we live in, but it's also what God models for us. Until next time, may God bless the trails you ride. - Ken McNabb Visit my website for clinics/event schedule & online tack store: https://www.kenmcnabb.com/ Follow me on Facebook & Instagram: Ken McNabb Horsemanship Subscribe to my email list: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/d5PpsVx
